Dementia is often identified as a loss. But the project begins with a simpler thought: people who live with dementia are still people, like all of us. They need freedom, connection, and a sense of belonging.
The project focuses on seniors and people with dementia, with social and medical amenities that embrace a warm, accessible village design. The project is located in Hobsonville, a developing residential area in Auckland.
The project is identified and designed according to three stages of dementia and healthy seniors. Hospital care for the last stages is needed; a more secure place in nature is needed.
The bush is protected, and the design is formed around it without touching it. Different levels is introduced in the design to resolve the sloped terrain and these levels provide terraces for events and meetings with a panoramic sea view.
Developing the Concept
The Village
The design of the project is shaped around the idea of European towns: small, busy with pedestrian traffic, and familiar to neighbours.
The concept is supported by workshop areas, small theatres and music halls, cafes, restaurants, boutique shops and Hobsonville Library.
The deck system between apartments provides easy, walkable access from facilities to rooms, which encourages people to talk with others and participate in activities.
The ramp surrounds the pond, offering opportunities to see nature and supporting mobility for people with dementia.

The flyer's design is intended to convey the project's main concept and atmosphere to the audience through colourful sketches and collages.
Residential Area
& Social Facilities
Natural materials in facades enhance the relationship with nature and the surrounding environment. Stone, wood, brick, and lime stucco, and their different coloured versions, match the environment and add playful, memorable places for people who live with dementia. The landmarks maintained a familiar feeling and invited people to spend time around them, with a variety of shops and cafes.
The sunbath, which is located on the seafront, enlarges and connects the Hobsonville Point Coastal Walkway. That gives all age groups the opportunity to participate in watersports and enjoy the view.
